Our Shared Community

We Are All Golden Knights

Everyday our students, staff, and faculty prove why they deserve to be here.  Clarkson sees diversity as a catalyst for creativity and innovation because we draw from the mutual appreciation of differences and a plurality of opinions, beliefs and cultural traditions that inform and enrich our lives.  New discoveries emerge when a variety of perspectives and experiences direct the discussion. A sense of belonging in our students and employees is essential to our success.

For us diversity, equity, inclusion, access is about the individual and understanding how their cultural backgrounds, challenges bested, skills built, and lessons learned need to be acknowledged as we recruit students to campus, support them along their educational journey and help them launch their careers.

Our Mission

Working to be a community with a positive climate and engaged community where our diverse members have a strong sense of belonging is at the heart of what we do. We work to instill the skills to execute these objectives in our community members. We believe these attributes make our students more successful throughout their careers and in their communities.

In addition to building relationships with the individuals in our communities, we take seriously the need to be vigilant about discrimination in all its forms that pose barriers to community members’ education and work.  These links will tell you more about our policies and procedures and give you ways to report concerns.

Places to Connect

Students, employees and community members can find a welcoming space in our lounge in the Student Center. Our office provides a platform and leadership opportunities for students interested in building and maintaining a shared community. We oversee important aspects of climate and engagement, provide important cultural programming, sponsor professional development and offer educational opportunities for all of Clarkson.

Our Diverse and Inclusive Environment

Clarkson University values diversity as a catalyst for creativity and innovation. We prioritize the individual’s experiences, background in and potential attracting and supporting students, shaping campus culture and empowering faculty and staff to ensure a sense of belonging crucial for student success.

  • Clarkson students come from all over the country and the world - with students representing over 40 states and 60 countries.
  • To promote a diverse shared community membership our events, programs, and organizations are open to all Clarkson community members.
  • We welcome your drive and curiosity to uncover new advancements and shape the future of science, technology, engineering, business and healthcare. Understand how Clarkson supports the diverse contributions of students through every stage of your journey.

Join Our Community

The Society of Women Engineers is actually the first organization I got involved in when I first came to Clarkson. I was an active member for both my freshman semesters and loved seeing and meeting other women pursuing a STEM education — especially meeting all the seniors who were so close to accomplishing something that I had just embarked on. They held many fun and developmental activities that made me feel confident and prepared for my time at Clarkson. I also got involved in Sister to Sister, which was a nice break from academics and gave me the opportunity to meet more women like me at Clarkson, which was just really comforting!

Transferring Credit to Clarkson

Clarkson strives to simplify the credit evaluation process. You submit official transcripts for all colleges attended with your application. From here, a relevant academic department will assess how your previously earned coursework will go toward your degree and the credits and courses needed to complete your bachelor’s. You’ll receive the results of your credit evaluation within two to three weeks of being accepted to Clarkson.

Does your school have an articulation agreement with Clarkson? Schedule a meeting with one of our academic advisors to verify your transfer agreement and discuss other requirements.

What I found to be the most beneficial and what helped me meet new people was joining as many clubs that interested me as possible. I joined the Society of Professional Women, Women and Wellness and the Make-A-Wish club, all on-campus clubs. Joining clubs that I thought I would like put me in contact with people with the same interests. Clarkson has so many on-campus clubs that there is, without a doubt, a club for everyone.

Clarkson University Is Right for You

If you are someone who is experiencing a medical need, and you’re looking for a community that supports your academic, social, and career growth, Clarkson University welcomes you to explore your passion in hands-on learning environments. Clarkson has programs spanning engineering, science, and technology to business and healthcare. Our close-knit campus is invested in your long-term success.

While encouraging your drive, the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) is here to connect students with disabilities to various support services, arrange for accommodations, and provide equal access to your academic experience. OAS will explore our resources, converse about available accommodations, and advocate for students with disabilities.  Our staff uses an interactive process that involves our students, staff, and faculty.

About the Office of Accessibility Services

We provide reasonable accommodations to create an accessible campus for students with disabilities.  Students participating in internships, co-ops, and fieldwork opportunities should meet with the OAS staff to coordinate how accommodations can be applied to professional settings. OAS coordinates with students that require housing and/or dining accommodations to ensure students’ needs are met. OAS reviews disability-related documentation, certifies eligibility for receipt of services, determines reasonable accommodations, and ensures the provision of those services.

Clarkson University assures equal educational opportunities by providing accommodations and services for qualified students with documented disabilities in accordance with federal law, specifically the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

By federal law, a person with a disability is any person who:

  1. Has a physical or mental impairment.
  2. Has a record of such an impairment.
  3. Is regarded as having such an impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities such as walking, standing, seeing, speaking, breathing, taking care of oneself or learning.

For students considering or utilizing the services of OAS:

  • Approximately one in 10 Clarkson students has registered with OAS for assistance with a disability (same as the national average for all college students).
  • Clarkson students affiliated with OAS have the same academic success (based on grade point averages) as their peers.
  • OAS offers temporary disability services to students with unanticipated injuries and needs, such as concussion and surgical recovery.
  • All services are provided at no additional charge.

Review our FAQs to learn more about coordinating accommodations through OAS.

The University’s responsibility to make a particular reasonable accommodation is limited by the qualification that to do so would not impose an undue hardship upon the University’s operations, programs or activities. If a particular accommodation imposes an undue hardship, the University will consider whether there are alternative accommodations that would not impose such hardship. This policy also applies to concerns regarding physical barriers or policies and procedures preventing access. To learn more about Clarkson’s policies related to disabilities, please review the Clarkson Student Regulations.

Regulations

In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, as amended in 2008, the Office of Accessibility Services provides equal access to educational programs and safeguards against discrimination for qualified students with disabilities as defined by the ADA. The ADA defines a person with a disability as any person who:

  • Has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
  • Has a record of such an impairment.
  • Is regarded as having such an impairment.

In order for OAS to determine if a student's condition meets the standard defined by the law, an evaluative intake interview will be conducted with the student, and any additional documentation supplied will be reviewed. This interview may occur face-to-face, through video or phone call or via email communication. All decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Any additional information requested following the intake interview will be used to determine the current functional limitations caused by the disability and reasonable accommodations in an academic or residential setting.

Decisions made by the Office of Accessibility Services may not translate to other institutions or be applicable for high-stakes exams such as the GRE, FE, MCAT, etc.

Temporary Disabilities

Services are available to students with temporary disabilities to provide access to campus academic programs and services.

Assistance cannot be provided for tasks of a personal nature such as scribing homework or assisting with home-health care.

Please contact the Office of Accessibility Services with your questions and concerns related to a temporary disability at 315-268-7643 or oas@clarkson.edu, and we will discuss resources and assistance that can be provided by Clarkson during this difficult time.

Academic Accommodation

Students with disabilities who require academic accommodations to ensure equal access to education may request an accommodation through the Office of Accessibility Services. Students may request such accommodations through Accommodations on their myCU account. In addition to the documentation guidelines described above, students may submit their high school IEP or 504 Plan or have their health provider complete and submit the form below. For more information about academic accommodations, please click here.

Housing Accommodation

Students with disabilities and/or medical conditions who require a specific type of housing to ensure equal access to education may request an accommodation through the Office of Accessibility Services. Due to the variety of offerings through University housing, nearly all disabilities and medical conditions can be accommodated through University housing. The University values the importance of learning to live alongside others and the community experience that comes with campus living. As such, only in the rarest of circumstances would a student be released from University housing. Specific details regarding deadlines and the accommodation request process can be found on the form below.

Dining Accommodation

Dining Services meets most student dietary restrictions through their regular dining operation. Learn about options for individuals with food allergies or intolerance on the Dining Services website. Students with disabilities who require unique or individualized dining to ensure equal access to education may request an accommodation through the Office of Accessibility Services. For dietary accommodations that can be accommodated through Dining Services, such as allergens, iron deficiencies, diabetes, etc., students should contact the Office of Accessibility Services to discuss accommodation options. The dietary accommodation requires that a person be a good self-advocate and ask questions about foods and food preparation prior to consumption. When a disability or medical condition is so severe that Dining Services is unable to safely and reasonably accommodate a student's disability or medical condition, the necessary accommodation is likely to impact the student's housing to ensure access to a kitchen. In this situation, the request would be handled through the form below.

Emotional Support Animal Accommodation

Students with disabilities and/or medical conditions who require an emotional support animal to ensure equal access to education may request an accommodation through the Office of Accessibility Services. Specific details regarding the accommodation request process can be found on the form below.

We strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all who attend here, work here and visit here. Medical documentation or approval from the Office of Accessibility Services is not required of University guests. Arrangements may be made with Dining Services without the disclosure of private medical information. Guests are encouraged to state that dietary needs are required due to medical reasons (without further explanation). Visit the Dining Services page for more information. Dining Services may be contacted at 315-268-3816.

Student Employment Opportunities

The Office of Accessibility Services is constantly looking for student workers. Students must be work-study eligible. You can review the job descriptions for both the proctor position and office assistant positions or view the application.
