Message From the Director

Clarkson researchers are on the forefront of finding new ways to clean up our environment. From getting rid of toxic “forever chemicals” like PFAS to reducing microplastics in our marine environments, our faculty are making a difference. Another “SMART” Clarkson student is making waves with his water research. And other ISE faculty and staff continue to gain recognition in the wider community, thanks to their ingenuity and scholarship. We are highlighting some of their accomplishments below.

PFAS Sensors Developed

Clarkson researchers have developed easy-to-use low-cost sensors for testing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Their work was recently highlighted in C&EN Chemical Engineering News, a chemical science and technology magazine covering high-profile research, government, industry, professional and technical news from around the world for the chemical, chemical engineering and related fields.

“SMART” Student Wins Award

Clarkson students are smart, we know that. But the Department of Defense is honoring another Clarkson student with their Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship. The double major in Civil and Environmental Engineering, focusing on Water Resources Engineering also was offered a summer internship.

Nature Research

Microplastics (MPs) as an emerging contaminant have become a threat to ecosystems due to their persistence in terrestrial, aquatic, and marine environments. Due to their ubiquitous presence, microplastics are currently becoming a major interest to researchers. Learn more about what one Clarkson professor is doing about it.

Partners in Ohio

Clarkson is partnering with Ohio Northern University to offer new pathways for growth. Students in ONU’s Doctor of Pharmacy program will have the option to simultaneously complete a master’s through Clarkson’s Reh School of Business, making themselves more marketable for analytical, managerial and executive-level positions.

The Business of Healthcare

As more clinical professionals want to understand the business aspects of healthcare, the Reh School has forged another partnership that will meet that need. Students from Notre Dame of Maryland University's School of Pharmacy can earn a master’s at Clarkson while they work on their Doctor of Pharmacy.

Making an Impact

Reh professors make an impact — not only at Clarkson, but around the world. Take Christian Felzensztein, for example. His study, “The Emergence of Family Entrepreneurship in the Transition Economy of Cuba,” recently received an award from the rector of the University of Monterrey and the Center for Family Business in Mexico.

Students who come to Clarkson know that entrepreneurship is a way of life, and they’re ready to live it. This spring, student teams covered themselves in glory by taking home top prizes in the 2023 North Country Regional Business Plan Competition. The teams pitched business ideas for cash prizes, and one first-year student at Clarkson even won the grand prize.

Reh students continue to amaze us with their creativity and entrepreneurial enthusiasm. This year, first-year students pitched 12 startups, many related to improving quality of life on campus. Students will also be reopening a coffee shop on campus that closed during the pandemic. And the Dean’s Challenge for Business Innovation had a winner.

Learning Business Globally

As you read this, Clarkson business students are dispersed around the globe, getting the most out of Global Business Programs in locations ranging from Scotland and Iceland to Croatia and Australia. Nineteen students received Inclusive Excellence Scholarships from the Reh School of Business that fund a semester of business education in an international setting.

Our MBA Program Lauded

Once again, Clarkson’s online MBA program has been ranked among the best. U.S. News & World Report released its 2023 rankings, placing our online MBA in the top 100 in the nation and among the top 65 best online MBA programs for veterans — a testament to “the exceptional value that our online programs offer to working professionals,” says Dean Nocetti.

Multiplying Microcredentials

Employers already had a big reason to hire Clarkson graduates — now they have a micro one. Clarkson recently received a $729,000 workforce development grant from New York state that will help expand our Advancing Industry With Microcredentials program. New courses in advanced manufacturing, clean technology and construction will make our grads more sought-after than ever.

A Beautiful Partnership

Micron Technology has awarded Professors Jihoon Seo and Alan Rossner a project to research the environmental sustainability of chemical mechanical planarization consumable manufacturing. On the heels of Micron’s announcement that it will invest up to $100 billion in a semiconductor fabrication facility in Upstate New York, this project looks like the beginning of a beautiful partnership.

Weather in Space

When you think of weather prediction, you probably think of our weather on Earth. Space weather, however, is harder to predict. The sun’s convection zone is where this weather begins, and Professor Chunlei Liang is working on a project to improve convection predictions. His project will be funded by a nearly $400k grant from the National Science Foundation.

Heading Off Devastation

Reducing greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere is one of the most critical ways we can hope to avoid the devastating effects of climate change. Professor Simona Liguori is hoping to develop one solution through a project that removes CO2 from the atmosphere by converting it into methanol. Her idea has been validated by a number of organizations that awarded her funding for the project.

Newest Golden Knights: join us in Burlington at Leddy Park on Thursday, August 3, 2023 from 6 - 8 p.m. for an evening of fun and connecting with Clarkson community members, including fellow incoming students, alumni, staff and current students.  This event is the perfect opportunity to ask questions, get excited about becoming a Golden Knight, and meet people in your area. A meal will be served and each student will be given commemorative merch!
