HALT! You there! Do you seek the greatest Pre-O trip to ever grace this earth? Look no further, because you’ve come to the right place. Join us on our quest to find the gneissest rocks the Southern Adirondacks has to offer. If you’re lucky enough to come along, you’ll spend your days catching lake views on the tops of our favorite cliffs, sampling gourmet crag snacks, and learning the climbing craft. When the sun gets low you’ll find yourself sitting around the fire playing cards, telling stories, and enjoying our fine camp cuisine. If the thought of trying climbing for the first time gives you the heebie jeebies, worry not! We were once in those shoes too. Give climbing one try and you’ll be hooked, the first one’s free anyway.

Itinerary:

Day 1: We’ll hit the road bright and early, and drive on down to the Queen of American Lakes. On our way we’ll take a pit stop at Ark Wall to show y’all the ropes. After a half-day of rope wrangling, we’ll waddle over to our campsite to set up our tents and hammock stacks. Us leaders will whip you up a delicious backcountry meal before we tuck in to the sound of bull frogs and crickets.

Day 2: Now that we’ve learned a thing or two about climbing and geology, we can take our skills to even greater heights! Shelving Rock will be our home for the day, as we catch some panoramic lake vistas and sun ourselves on the talus fields. Before we head back to camp for the night, we can take a shower in a nearby waterfall or a dip in the crystal clear waters of Lake George.

Day 3: On our last day in the woods we’ll break camp and high tail it back to campus. Rest assured, you’ll make it back to your dorm with enough time to shower and return to civilization.

Day 4: Make breakfast, pack up camp, and hike back out to the ADK Loj. This will be a similar day to the first one, but backwards!!

Looking for a relaxing, but exciting trip to introduce you to Clarkson? This historic canoe route is the trip for you (the trip for anyone, and everyone!). Explore the beauty of the Adirondacks while paddling the Seven Carries. Start Day One off with a beautiful paddle through Little Clear Pond, a brief portage to get to Saint Regis Pond (we promise it's not that bad), and enjoy the rest of the day relaxing at the lakefront campsite swimming, fishing, and eating a delicious hot meal. On day two, pond hopping begins! We will paddle through four lovely ponds, each with their own beautiful views, and do small portages in between. On day three, we will back track and explore more mini ponds. On the final morning, we will wake up early and catch a lovely sunrise on our short paddle back to the boat launch!

Itinerary:

Day 1: We will start the day with a peaceful paddle across Little Clear Pond and a short 0.5-mile portage to Saint Regis Pond. Once on Saint Regis Pond we will explore the many campsites and find the best view of the pond to set up camp. This will take up most of our day, filled with paddling, relaxing and swimming.

Day 2: On day two we will pond hop up to Green Pond, Little Long Pond, Bear Pond, and Bog Pond. Paddling short distances and carrying up to a mile in total. Each pond offers different views and calming scenery.

Day 3: On the third day we can paddle back towards Saint Regis Pond, and can explore other small ponds around Saint Regis Pond.

Day 4: We will be leaving this morning, doing a short carry from Saint Regis Pond to Little Clear Pond and paddling back to the boat launch.

Additional Note: “If the original plan does not work, we can hangout and paddle on Little Clear Pond. This trip is very versatile and can be adapted to the skill set of the students who go on our trip.”

A photo of Jack Reed on a climbing trip.

Hey Everyone! My name is Jack Reed and I won’t be any of your pre-o leaders this year. BUT THAT IS because I’m the one organizing the Outing Club’s pre-orientation program. This means I’m your contact if you have any questions about pre-o, or anything else you are curious about. My email is
joreed@clarkson.edu and don’t hesitate to send your questions my way. Anyways, I’m from just outside Washington D.C, a political science major, and an avid outdoor enthusiast. My main activities are snowboarding, climbing, and canoeing, but in the grand scheme of things I just love ripping the crap out of the outdoors. Any trip you go on will be an absolute blast. And with that being said, don’t get dead.
P.s. Climbing and Canoeing trips are elite, although I am heavily biased.

Major: Chemical Engineering, Class of 2025
Hey all! My name is Haley and I am wicked excited to take you on this trip! I am a Senior so this will be my FOURTH Pre-O (third time leading). I hope you are ready for a week full of sick views, great vibes, and fantastic company. Sophie and I will be taking you on the most epic trip of your lives.

Major: Chemical Engineering, Class of 2025
Bonjour Hello! I'm Sophie and this will be my last year at clarky (sad). I am a ChemE with a minor in Materials Eng and Math, and yes I still have time for fun. I have been in CUOC since my first week of freshman year, and am totally unbiased in saying we are the radest people on campus. My favorite outdoor sports are hiking and backpacking. I am from Long Island, but I've spent the last two summers in the capital region and try to get up to the ADKs whenever I can. This will be mine and Haley May's second Pre-OH trip together. We had the greatest group of kids last year, so let's keep the ball rolling!!

A photo of Jon Wilson muddy while on a hike.

Major: Mechanical Engineering, Class of Fall 2025
HEY YOU!
Hope that got your attention. My name's Jon, I like to do just about everything outdoors, like rock climbing, skiing, tearing my ACL, canoeing, carrying in too much gear, cooking, long walks on the beach, hammocking, bog stomping, bird watching, eating entire apples (seeds and stems included), touching rocks, listening to random old people's stories, trail work, chasing waterfalls, brushing my teeth with Dr. Bronner's, spreading LNT practices, sticking to the rivers and lakes that I'm used to, meeting new people, pooping in holes, oh and hiking. Last year I was one of the "Hiking Chairs"(whatever that is) in club. In all seriousness I had a blast on my freshman pre-o and I am a firm believer that the best way to get to know someone is to hike with them so I'm super excited to get to meet you all and have an awesome trip!
Oh and for the parents, I am a Wilderness First Responder and a NOLS Alumni.

Major: Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, Class of 2025
Hello everyone, my name is Séamus! I'm a rising Junior at Clarkson, and it would be an understatement to say that I enjoy my time in the outdoors. Some of my favorite activities include hiking in the greater Adirondack region, along with fishing in the St. Lawrence River. There's plenty of other activities I enjoy, but these I will say are definitely my top two. My favorite moments in the outdoors is when I'm with close friends making everlasting memories with and appreciating every moment I have in nature. Looking forward to meeting everyone who's excited to explore into the wilderness.

Major: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Class of 2026
Hey! My name is Sam Ellingson and I’m from Plainfield, New Hampshire, near Dartmouth college. I am a Junior, and I am double majoring in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, but more importantly I am the CUOC sock wrestling champion, and I love spending time outside no matter what I’m doing. When there isn’t snow on the ground I can be found biking, hiking, climbing, and just generally messing around in the outdoors. Over the winter I just try to get as many days on skis as I can, both resort and backcountry. I will be leading a canoe trip and I plan to get up to as much fun as possible. I hope to be able to spice up our trip with canoe tipping, battleship and the ability to make a great pan of backcountry brownies. I went on a Pre-O my freshman year and I could not recommend it enough so you all should sign up for one!

I have currently completed 108 credit hours at this school and I like playing cards. One time, I slipped and fell in the kitchen because of snow (ouch). I am an Adirondack 46-er (look it up it’s pretty cool) and I am a wilderness first responder (look it up it’s pretty cool). Remember, outside is the best side. End of bio.

Greetings earthlings! My name is Angie, and I’m a senior, former climbing chair, wilderness first responder, and certified single pitch instructor. Basically, you can tell your parents that I’ll keep you safe while you dance (or dangle) on the edges of cliffs.
I fell in love with climbing 3 years ago when I was a freshman on pre-o, just like you! I love to be outdoors, soaking up sunshine and wind, watching the birds and trees, getting dirt on my hands or swimming in a stream. I’m an artist, traveler, and a vegan. So that’s three things, but I have more.
I can’t wait to meet you all, become good friends, and to introduce you to my favorite sport!

A photo of Emily Milleville on a climbing trip.

Major: Civil Engineering, Class of 2027
Hey ya’ll,
My name is Emily, and I'm a sophomore studying Civil Engineering. I am from the not so cool side of New York State where there are no fun rocks… aka Buffalo. I like to spend most of my time outside either climbing, hiking, slack-lining, and when it’s snow season I like to ski and dabble with some ice climbing. My favorite of these would have to be climbing though. If I’m not outside you can usually find me at the climbing wall on campus. As I was only a wee freshman last year on pre-o and had never stepped foot into the back-country, I had the absolute time of my life.I learned to climb for the first time with my awesome leaders. Now look at me, certified and ready to lead some lucky new freshmen on an amazing climbing adventure. Since Pre-O last I have continued to climb and learn, and now I am one of the climbing chairs in CUOC. I’m so excited to meet you guys!

Hey y’all!
My name is Carson and I’m a senior studying Mechanical Engineering. More importantly I love skiing, hiking, sailing, sun tanning, oh and of course climbing. Rocks? Ice? Trees? You got it, I’ll climb it. I’m also a certified Wilderness First Responder and NOLS graduate, so if you’re worried about the perils of the great outdoors, don’t fret. And if that’s not enough for ya, I’m also somewhat of a local to the Lake George region, and I’m super stoked to show you some of the finest adventuring we have to offer. My goal is to make this one of the most fun trips of your first semester and maybe even your whole year! I can’t wait to meet everyone and go play around in the ‘dacks!
Peace.

Major: Computer Science, Class of Fall 2025
Hey, I'm Nick, and I'll be leading one of the climbing trips! This fall I'll be a junior majoring in computer science. I've spent the past two years climbing rock and ice all over the daks. Thanks to the outing club, I've been certified as a wilderness first responder and single pitch instructor, which means that I probably won't drop the break strand. When I'm not climbing, you can probably hear me playing the tin whistle somewhere on campus. Get stoked!
