In 2007, she earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the United States after receiving her BSc and MSc in statistics from the University of Calcutta in India. Mondal joined Clarkson University after receiving her degree and has been a faculty member at Clarkson since then.

Mondal's research interest is in the application and development of statistical methods for environmental, biological, and public health questions. After joining the mathematics department at Clarkson University, she has worked on research projects with numerous faculty from the Coulter School of Engineering,  David D. Reh School of Business, Lewis School of Health Sciences, and School of Arts and Sciences. Mondal had a fantastic opportunity to use her statistical knowledge while collaborating with graduate students, undergraduate students, and faculty members from other disciplines. In her research group, Mondal has supervised 10 master's and doctoral students as well as 30 undergraduates. Mondal's students have presented their work at professional conferences in the US, Asia, Canada, and Europe. So far, her group members delivered over 100 oral presentations and poster presentations. Mondal has published more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented her work more than 65 times at professional and academic conferences. Her research is supported by a number of funding agencies at both the national and state levels.

Mondal teaches courses in the areas of Statistical Inference, Applied Statistics, and Data Mining. Her teaching focuses on effective ways to integrate problem-based learning and inquiry methodologies into a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses at Clarkson. At Clarkson, she has continued with a strong pedagogical record by creating a variety of new courses, introducing a project-based method of learning for solving practical problems, and incorporating the knowledge into the fundamental applied statistics courses.

Over the years Mondal's initiatives and support allowed the MSDA program to expand significantly. Identifying, acquiring, managing, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting large amounts of data in a variety of professional fields and organizational settings is a highly sought-after skill, and this interdisciplinary program is designed to give students the tools they need to be successful professionals in this field.

She has received various honors from Clarkson University, including the Phalanx Commendable Leadership Award (2023), Diversity and Inclusion Award (2022), CUSA Outstanding Teaching Awards (2019, 2023), and Respect Award (2012) among others.
