Mark W. Manning Joins Clarkson University Board of Trustees
Mark W. Manning '88, a partner at Burns & Levinson LLP, was named to the Clarkson University Board of Trustees on February 3. As a Trustee, Manning will serve on the Academic Mission Committee and on the Financial Affairs Committee as part of its Investment Subcommittee.
“I am honored to have been elected to Clarkson University’s Board of Trustees this weekend in Dallas,” Manning said. “I am looking forward to adding whatever I can to an institution where I received a great education, made lifelong friends, and is an important part of the place that I, in so many ways, still call home.”
Manning is a partner in the Corporate Group and a leader of the Boston-based law firm as a member of its Executive Committee. He serves as a legal and business advisor in a broad set of specialties, including mergers and acquisitions (M&A), growth capital, and intellectual property.
"Bringing a Clarkson alumnus on as a member of the Board of Trustees is always exciting, and having an opportunity to add the business and legal acumen Mark Manning possesses is a major asset to the University,” said Clarkson University President Marc P. Christensen, Ph.D. P.E. “Mark’s experience working with industry to spur growth and the knowledge and leadership experience he has gained in this role are qualities that will benefit Clarkson greatly. Beyond these specific attributes, it is also wonderful that Mark's family tree has a long and engaged history with the University and the Potsdam community as a whole.”
Manning regularly facilitates M&A deals across a wide variety of industry sectors on behalf of both buyers and sellers. Similarly, he negotiates growth capital financings on behalf of both emerging businesses and capital sources. Additionally, he helps clients commercialize their intellectual property, develop inbound and outbound licensing arrangements, and craft appropriate ownership and usage rights for jointly developed IP.
Manning also acts as an outside general counsel to a number of clients, advising them on legal, commercial and governance matters. At Burns & Levinson, Manning serves or has served on multiple internal committees steering the future of Burns & Levinson, including its DEI Board.
Outside of work, Manning has held previous leadership positions for Clarkson as President of the Boston Alumni Chapter and as a member of the Alumni Council. He also was President and Chairman for 9 years of a leading Boston metro area nonprofit, Dedham Community House, and now serves on the Strategic Planning Committee for Ursuline Academy, a college preparatory school in Dedham, MA.
A proud Potsdam native, Manning grew up in his family’s business and credits his professional and personal successes to the values and experiences he gained through his early years in northern New York. Each year, he and his family still enjoy time at his family home in Hannawa Falls in the summer and other times of the year.
