Student Projects for Engineering Experience & Design
AISC/ASCE Steel Bridge:
Here’s the challenge:
Move people and material over natural obstacles. You have steel to work with, but the bridge you build has to withstand high weight and strong force.
You must also be able to take apart the bridge and move it easily from one site to another.
Work toward meeting these challenges and you will:
-Gain practical design and engineering skills in real-world situations
-Get hands-on experience working with steel
-Learn how to interpret natural topography and how to overcome challenges posed by natural obstacles
-Develop team-working and leadership skills
-Use your engineering knowledge to compete with other teams across the country
Challenges in these competitions lie in the design parameters.
In 2013, Clarkson University's team attended the AISC/ASCE Upstate New York Regional Student Steel Bridge Competition in April.
During the competition, the teams were timed on bridge construction and judged on accuracy and load deflection.
Clarkson won 1st place in Bridge Aesthetics and 3rd in Stiffness. The team took 4th place overall.
