Clarkson University Start-Up NY Proposal Approved
The START-UP NY Approval Board today unanimously approved Clarkson University's plan for a Start-Up NY designation. Clarkson will now begin to accept business applications based on the criteria of its plan.
"This is great news for the economy of the entire North Country," said Clarkson University President Tony Collins. "A number of businesses have already inquired about our Peyton Hall, Old Snell, and Old Main locations, with current plans to create 75 regional jobs. Using already existing space on our campus as well as our planned approach to support other approved sites in the North Country as part of our Innovation Hot Spot outreach, START-UP NY will enable us to attract high-tech and other start-ups not only from across the nation, but internationally, as well. Clarkson is committed to elevating global recognition of the North Country as one of the special places on the planet to visit, live, work and study.”
Clarkson proposed to designate 28,000 square feet of vacant space under the Start-Up NY program on its downtown campus, which has proximity to the Peyton Hall Incubator that provides comprehensive business support services and an existing network of entrepreneurs. This location is also near local banks, government offices, existing small businesses, retail, and community gathering spaces.
The types of businesses Clarkson University plans to partner with in the Start-Up NY Program are those primarily focused on high-technology, including nanoscience, Web interface and development, and sustainable technologies, as well as extending the University’s environmental and energy research expertise to support value-adding business models that leverage the region’s natural assets such as agriculture produce, processed farm products, water systems technology and wood for local production export.
Through organized advisory councils and one-on-one relationships, Clarkson alumni play a key role in advising faculty and students about trends in the technology and innovation sectors, as well as providing mentorships to specific businesses that may need specialized attention. These relationships will benefit future tenants in the Start-Up NY Program.
From research to recruiting new talent, Clarkson University also has long-standing industry partnerships and experience in attracting them to new talent and product ideas, employee professional development, and commercialization opportunities, which adds a unique depth to businesses choosing to co-locate near the University.
To date, there have been multiple inquiries from businesses that can accelerate their growth and speed to the marketplace by advancing research and innovation through the unique combination of qualities, programs and services offered by Clarkson University. This aligns to the ongoing academic mission of the University to engage in high-quality research, scholarship and outreach in engineering, business, science, health and liberal arts and advances the shared belief of the Clarkson community that humane and environmentally sound economic and social development derive from the expansion, diffusion and application of knowledge. Those same principles will guide engagement with affiliates in the Start-Up NY Program.
Start-Up NY seeks to accelerate entrepreneurialism and job creation across the state on a large scale, with a particular focus on Upstate New York. University and college communities serve as the framework of the program to attract high-tech and other start-ups, venture capital, new business and investments from across the globe. Under the program, businesses have the opportunity to operate tax-free for 10 years on eligible land and space. Businesses partner with the higher education institutions and are able to access industry experts and advanced research laboratories.
Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
