Clarkson University Students Partner with American Cancer Society to Raise Money in Upcoming Relay For Life
Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the country, amounting to over 1,500 deaths per day.
For the seventh year in a row, the Clarkson University Physical Therapy Club will join the crusade to help fight cancer by staging a Relay for Life event on Friday, March 25, to benefit the American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is a series of fundraising events held nationwide to raise money for cancer research. During the relay, sponsored teams walk or run throughout the night. The goal is to have at least one person from each team on the track at all times. Teams compete to raise the most money, which goes toward finding a cure for cancer.
The fifty teams in Clarkson’s 2011 Relay for Life have already raised over $13,000 for the fight against cancer.
“The money raised goes toward the American Cancer Society’s mission of research, education, advocacy, and patient services,” says Kelsey Kneeshaw, the president of the Physical Therapy Club. “The event also benefits the Clarkson campus because it brings us together for one night to fight for a great cause.”
The relay is composed of three phases.
In the first phase, those members of the relay who have survived cancer walk around the track together. This emotional lap signifies the victory that they have achieved.
In the second phase, each member of the relay whose life has been touched by cancer lights a candle in memory of someone who has died from this disease.
Finally, in the third phase, known as the Fight Back Ceremony, all relay members pledge to do their part to help rid the world of cancer.
“I ‘relay’ because I have family members and friends who have been affected by cancer,” says Kneeshaw. “I believe the Clarkson community ‘relays’ for the same reason. There are very few people in this community who don’t know someone who has suffered from cancer.”
