From left: Distinguished University Professor and CAMP Director S.V. Babu, Professor Egon Matijevic (the Victor K. LaMer Chair of Colloid and Surface Science at Clarkson University), Sir John Meurig Thomas (Honorary Professor of Materials Science at the University of Cambridge, England), and Clarkson University’s President Anthony Collins.

The Seventeenth Shipley Distinguished Lectureship was presented by Sir John Meurig Thomas (Honorary Professor of Materials Science at the University of Cambridge, England), who served as the director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain from 1986-1991. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 for “services to chemistry and the popularization of science." Sir Thomas is known as the Catalyst Man and has the mineral meurigite named after him.

His talks titled “Sir Humphry Davy: Natural Philosopher, Poet, Man of Action,” and
“Unpredictability and Chance in Science and Technology” were sponsored by the Shipley Family Foundation with support from Clarkson’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP).

Sir John Meurig Thomas delivered the second annual Shipley Distinguished Lectureship in 1996, was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from Clarkson University in 2005, and spoke on the occasion of Professor Egon Matijevic’s 50th anniversary at Clarkson in 2007. He is the only individual invited twice to deliver the Shipley Distinguished Lectures.
