Clarkson University Sculpture Featured in Book

Sculptor David Black has featured a Clarkson University landmark in his book David Black - Urban Sculpture as Proto Architecture.

The book on outdoor architecture features his work "Portside," the large white sculpture outside of the Cheel Campus Center.

The sculpture was a gift of the late Helen Snell Cheel in memory of her son, Bertrand S. Cheel, Clarkson Class of 1962. The Cheel Campus Center is named in recognition of a major gift commitment by Cheel, daughter of Sara and North Country Congressman Bertrand H. Snell, a longtime Clarkson trustee, and wife of the late Harold Cheel.

Book cover: David Black - Urban Sculpture as Proto ArchitectureBlack terms his sculptures "proto-architecture," a combining of architectural forms: columns, arch-like units, canopies, and benches -- with sculptural elements: imagery, a mix of stable forms with high energy, and projecting movement.

He began his college career as a physics major. His highly imaginative constructions are carefully engineered, leading to his moniker as "artist-engineer."

Black has been a professor of art at Ohio State University, Columbus, for many years and is a native of Gloucester, Mass.

The book also includes an essay by art critic Donald Kuspit.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
