The Potsdam Central School District and Clarkson University will initiate an exciting new collaboration in the fall of 2010. Under the new program, qualified Potsdam High School seniors will receive scholarships that will cover the tuition for one regularly-offered course each semester at Clarkson University.
In announcing the program, Clarkson Provost Thomas C. Young stated, "We at Clarkson welcome the opportunity to partner with Potsdam Central Schools to provide an academic challenge to a group of outstanding high school students from our community." Patrick Brady, Superintendant of the Potsdam Central School District, expressed his support and appreciation by saying, "I want to thank Clarkson University for sharing this excellent opportunity with our high school students. Due to their generosity, many of our exceptional students will be able to experience college level life and academics. Our long standing partnership with Clarkson continues to be very important to the District and we welcome this initiative to extend the relationship."
The new program was initiated when high-achieving rising seniors at Potsdam High School recently were invited to apply to the program, which involved submitting information to their guidance counselors about their interests, plus a current high school transcript and a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher. The guidance counselors and the Potsdam High School principal, Joann Chambers, screened the applicants and forwarded their recommendations to a review committee at the University. Successful candidates were notified of their acceptance during the week of June 14.
The high school students to participate in the 2010-2011 school year are interested in courses in a number of different areas including Economics, Mathematics, and Environmental Science. Once appropriate courses are recommended, schedules at the high school will be adjusted accordingly. Students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the college.
Students enrolling in a course this fall include Geoff Carvill, Danny Charlebois, Tyler Chin, Mariana Choong, John Coleman, Hannah Gingrich, Sebastian Grimberg, Maya Holsen, Avery Nagy-MacArthur, Lily Nagy-MacArthur, Kara Murray, and Ruisheng Wang.
Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in six alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company.
