Potsdam, N.Y. - Robert I. Topping of Dansville, N.Y., owner of Topping Engineers, has received the Golden Knight Award from his alma mater, Clarkson University.
Presented each year during Reunion Weekend, Clarkson's most prestigious alumni award is given to alumni who have distinguished themselves either by service to Clarkson through Alumni Association activities or have demonstrated outstanding career achievement, bringing distinction to themselves and to Clarkson.
Robert Topping received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Clarkson in 1954 and a master of science degree in civil engineering from Cornell University in 1957. While at Clarkson, he was a member of Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi honor societies, and the Honor Guard. He also was a member of ROTC, OPiO fraternity and the Student Union Committee, and served as a class officer and chairman of the Ice Carnival Committee.
After graduation, Topping joined the United States Army, serving his country for two years. In 1957, he joined Erdman & Anthony Consulting Engineers as an associate. He established in 1972 Robert I. Topping Consulting Engineers P.C. His company was renamed Topping & Windus Consulting Engineers in 1983 after Clarkson graduate Walter Windus 69 joined his business.
Today, Topping's company, Topping Engineers, has over 52 year's experience in consulting engineering. The company offers expertise in structural design, site development, land subdivision, streets and highways, drainage, water and wastewater for industrial and commercial projects, as well as municipal and individual clients. He is directly involved with all aspects of his firm's projects, including engineering and design, contract preparation and administration, and construction supervision.
Topping also taught structural design and drafting at RIT's National Institute for the Deaf. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Consulting Engineering Council, Livingston County Planning Board and the Rochester Engineering Society. He is a registered professional engineer in New York state.
A lifelong supporter of Clarkson University, Topping has served as a class reunion gift chair and a class partner assisting with fundraising for the Campaign for Clarkson. For years, he was a member of the Alumni Association Board of Governors, and was an exemplary volunteer serving as his class reunion activity chair for many class reunions.
Topping lives in Dansville with his wife, Dorothy.
