Documentary About Amish to Air on WCKN TV
WCKN Television, Time Warner cable access channel 30 in Canton and Potsdam, will present a locally produced documentary about the controversy between the Swartzentruber Amish and the Town of Morristown Planning Board on Monday, March 23, at 7 p.m. The program will be re-aired on Tuesday, March 24, at 7 p.m.
The documentary is titled "The First Amendment" and was produced and directed by Jennifer Niles of Colton, N.Y.
In an interview with North Country This Week last July, Niles said, "I want everybody to see all sides. There is much that people don’t understand about the Amish, about the way they’ve been living for so many years, so why now punish them for their beliefs? They’ve never been denied permits before, so why now, when all they want to do is build a house for their family?"
The documentary features Steven G. Ballan, assistant public defender, and SUNY Potsdam Prof. Karen Johnson-Weiner, an expert on the Amish.
