A team of educators from the region recently received the Best Paper Award from the K-12 division of the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE).

The paper, titled "Successful Institutionalization of a K-12 - University STEM Partnership Program," describes the growing partnership and educational activities to promote understanding and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. asee-best-paper

The paper provides details of the various programs that Clarkson University has established over the last decade with the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES and area school districts.

Clarkson’s Office of Educational Partnerships oversees the various programs, which now include over 150 teachers and classes from all school districts in the county and over 20 Clarkson faculty members and 30 students who are leading in-class or teacher development activities in subjects ranging from "Finding Nano" to robotics to ecology.

Susan E. Powers, associate dean of engineering for research and graduate studies at Clarkson University, presented the paper at the annual ASEE conference in Pittsburgh.

The co-authors on the paper included Bruce Brydges, director of academic assessment at SUNY Potsdam; Gail Gotham, administrator for program planning and development at St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES; and, from Clarkson University, Peter Turner, interim dean of the School of Arts & Sciences; James J. Carroll, associate professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department; and Douglas G. Bohl, assistant professor in the Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Department.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in six alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
