Clarkson Co-Ed Professional Fraternity Takes Home Awards At Regional Conference
Instead of heading home to have their laundry done for them, enjoying home-cooked food, or just lounging around Potsdam, a group of seven fraternity brothers from Clarkson’s Delta Chi Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity spent their February break in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. They were there to participate in the “Success Institute,” an annual regional conference hosted by the Alpha Kappa Psi national office.
The annual conference is intended to help soon-to-be professionals get ready for the real world. The students who attended learned about a range of topics from risk management to self promotion. “While this is useful knowledge,” said senior Chris Wheeler, Chapter president, “the greatest part about going was to see how we have grown in the past year and to have that recognized by our national office. We were the only chapter to win multiple awards.”
“The most prestigious recognition at the conference is the 1st Place Standing in our region (Eastern Region) and Delta Chi brought that award back to Clarkson,” remarked Sandra Zuhlsdorf, the Executive Officer of Clarkson’s School of Business. Zuhlsdorf, along with Floyd Ormsbee, a business instructor at the University, advise Delta Chi. The Clarkson students out performed perennial rival Cornell and other prestigious universities such as Carnegie Mellon, University of Pennsylvania, Marshall and Canisius College. “Many of us came into the fraternity during some hard times and we worked very hard. This award is the fruit of that labor,” commented Wheeler. Clarkson has won first-place regional honors four times. Points are awarded for events held, pledges inducted, brothers initiated, fund raising, training events attended, and timely reporting of chapter events.
Alpha Kappa Psi began at NYU in the fall of 1904 and is celebrating its centennial year. The fraternity has grown to become the largest international business fraternity in the world. Clarkson’s Delta Chi Chapter was established in 1958 and currently has 26 members.
