World In Potsdam Diversity Festival To Hold Several Fun-Filled Events For Everyone
The 12th Annual World in Potsdam Diversity Festival will bring together members of the Potsdam community in celebration of the village’s unique and diverse cultural heritage through music, dance, art and food. The fun-filled festivities are slated for Saturday, October 22, from noon to 4:30 p.m. in the SUNY Potsdam Barrington Student Union.
A performance by the Children’s Chorus of Crane will begin the day’s celebrations at noon. The festival’s opening ceremony will follow shortly after with a welcoming address from Potsdam Mayor Ruth Garner, Interim SUNY Potsdam President Robert L. King, Clarkson University President Anthony G. Collins and the Potsdam Ministerial Association. Winners of the World in Potsdam Writing Contest will be announced at this time.
The Rob Roy Pipers and Dancers, a returning crowd favorite, are set to dazzle children and adults alike with their performances of traditional Scottish music and dance. For more than 50 years, the Kingston, Ontario-based, group has entertained crowds throughout Canada, the United States and even Scotland. They are scheduled to perform from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.
An international poetry reading will be held from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. Participants will read poetry in their native language and in English.
There will be several activities hands-on crafts, demonstrations and international displays for everyone to enjoy from noon to 3 p.m.
The day’s festivities will conclude with student performances by Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam students at 2 p.m., including step dancing and an international fashion show.
George Arnold, director of SUNY Potsdam’s dining services, will prepare an array of delectable delights from around the world. Tasty cuisine from North Africa, the Middle East, India, Greece, Asia and many other cultures will be served from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
Tickets for the dinner are $10 per person. Checks and SUNY Potsdam student meal plans will be accepted. Checks should be made out to the Potsdam College Foundation and sent to Dr. Mo, 216 Sisson Hall, SUNY Potsdam, 44 Pierrepont Ave., Potsdam, NY, 13676. The deadline for ticket purchase is Oct. 15. In addition to the October 22 lineup, the Community Performance Series will bring “Hands Full of Beauty” directed by Srinivas Krishnan to the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall on Thursday, October 20, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is sponsored by the World in Potsdam Diversity Festival, the SUNY Potsdam Office of Residence Life and PACES.
