Clarkson Professor And Graduate Student Receive Award From Industry Applications Society

Clarkson University’s Pragasen Pillay, Jean Newell Distinguished Professor in Engineering, and electrical and computer engineering graduate student Timothy Humiston, have been selected by the Electric Machines Committee of the Industry Applications Society (IAS) to receive the Best Paper Award Third Prize for the 2003 Conference.

The co-authors presented the paper “Parameter measurements to study surge propagation in induction machines” last fall at the IAS annual meeting in Salt Lake City.

Pillay and Humiston will receive their award at this year’s meeting in October in Seattle.

IAS is associated with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a non-profit, technical professional association of more than 360,000 individual members in approximately 175 countries. The IAS mission to be a world leader in the advancement of technology and dissemination of technical information to support professionals engaged in the applications of electrical and electronic engineering to industry.

Pragasen Pillay joined the faculty of Clarkson in 1995. In 1999, he was appointed an adjunct professor in electrical engineering at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. His research focuses on electrical machine drives for industrial and alternate energy applications, power quality and energy efficiency. He is also on the faculty of the Clarkson Center for the Environment.

He received his doctoral degree from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 1987. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a fellow of the British IEEE, and is the past chairman of both the IEEE Industry Applications Society's Industrial Drives Committee and the IEEE Power Engineering Society's Induction Machinery Sub-Committee.
