Clarkson Sife Team Preps For National Competition Following First Place Finish In Regionals
The Clarkson University chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), a national organization that challenges student groups to create and operate entrepreneurial projects that improve the lives of others through free enterprise, received first place in a regional competition held recently in Connecticut.
This is the third year in a row the Clarkson team has come home from the area competition with top honors.
Competing SIFE teams from New York and New England colleges and universities attended the 2003 regional competition and presented their educational outreach projects and accomplishments. Panels of business leaders judged the teams on the effectiveness, creativity and innovation of their projects.
As a regional winner, the Clarkson SIFE team will have the opportunity to compete against other regional champions at the 2003 SIFE USA National Exposition in May.
The team is also one of 15 finalists chosen for two special competitions. An educational business ethics video, written and produced by SIFE members and exhibited in elementary schools in New York, is a finalist in the business ethics programs category.
The Clarkson team is also a finalist for the Kaufman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Entrepreneur’s Assistance Award for their work with the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce. The team collaborated on a study that analyzed the economic factors behind the closing of Ames Department Store and worked with local merchants to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the closing.
All of the projects were designed to utilize the experience and talents of the SIFE team members and to meet the criteria for national competition.
SIFE is the world’s preeminent collegiate free enterprise organization. SIFE provides leadership training, regional competitions and career opportunity fairs for thousands of college students throughout 33 countries, and awards more than $400,000 in prize money to college student teams each year. There are currently over 1,400 SIFE teams worldwide.
