This year’s “World in Potsdam” Diversity Festival will feature its own specially designed postage cancellation stamp, offered on the day of the festival, Saturday, September 23.
Festival visitors will be able to have their postage cancelled with this special stamp. The festival committee designed the stamp, which will be imprinted only with specially chosen purple ink in celebration of the festival.
“The cancellation stamp is a neat way to bring interest from around the world to a small town,” said Al LaValley, Potsdam Post Office supervisor. “You’d be surprised how many people request stamps.”
By integrating the cancellation stamp into the festival, stamp collectors from around the world are able to send a piece of postage to the Potsdam Post Office, have their mail stamped, then sent back to them, free of charge. Those wishing to receive the special stamp also have until October 23 to send their mail to: Diversity Station, c/o Potsdam Post Office, 21 Elm Street, Potsdam, NY 13676-9998.
In addition to the cancellation stamp, the Diversity Festival will sell cachets— or post cards-- as a souvenir of the World in Potsdam.
“The cachets will feature photos of previous World in Potsdam festivals,” said Mary Theis, festival chair. “People will be able to send the cachets to family and friends to see what the World in Potsdam is all about.”
The “World in Potsdam” Diversity Festival is cosponsored by Clarkson University, SUNY Potsdam, the Village of Potsdam and the Sweetgrass Foundation.
