Clarkson's Hyperion Places 17th On Day Four Of Sunrayce
CLEMSON, S.C. (6/23/99) — The Clarkson Solar Knights finished 17th in today's fourth stage of Sunrayce '99. Clarkson's overall position in the 10-day race was unofficially number 13 at this hour; they were in position 11 overall yesterday at the end of day three.
Hyperion, driven by Alison Green, completed the 149 miles from Charlotte to Clemson in six hours and 59 minutes.
Wednesday's first place team, Messiah College (Grantham, Pa.), crossed the finish line at Clemson University in 5 hours, 9 minutes and 20 seconds (5:09:20). Its car, Genesis 99, covered the day's route at an average speed of 28.99 mph. Finishing in second place was Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS), the winner of yesterday's leg. Finishing in third place for the second straight day was University of Missouri - Rolla's Solar Miner II.
Early morning sun in Charlotte gave way to partly cloudy skies in Spartanburg, S.C., mid-day point for day four, and it was more of the same in Clemson.
Using a conservative strategy, Green and Hyperion averaged 21.36 M.P.H. over the course, electing to save battery power for tomorrow's 134-mile stage from Clemson to Atlanta, a stage that will feature some mountain driving.
Leonard said the team will continue to play it safe tomorrow, saving as much power as possible for the days ahead. But he also said he was disappointed with the weather over the past four days. "We wanted to see what these cars could do," he said. "But, we'll deal with what we have."
Forecasters are calling for partly cloudy skies tomorrow with an 80 percent chance of showers.
