Thomas H. Dooley Awarded Clarkson University Honorary Degree

Thomas H. Dooley, retired CIGNA Corporation executive vice president and retired president of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company, today (May 16) received an honorary doctor of science degree at Clarkson University's 106th Commencement in Potsdam, N.Y.
The degree was awarded "for his sustained and invaluable service to his alma mater, Clarkson, and for his distinguished professional achievement and leadership in business, law, education, and public service."
In addition to the fields of insurance and education, his career has encompassed accounting, law, and public service in a variety of state appointive and elective offices. A former practicing attorney, he has been admitted to the Connecticut Bar, U.S. District Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. His elective offices include two terms in the Connecticut House of Representatives.
After graduating from Clarkson in 1956, where he was elected to Clarkson's highest honorary, Phalanx, and earned a B.S. in business administration, he served with the U.S. Army's 8th Ordnance Battalion in Hanau, Germany. He later received his J.D. degree with honors from the University of Connecticut School of Law, where he was editor of the Law review and designated a Starr Fellow, the school's highest academic award. He has authored several articles in law and tax journals.
In 1981 he was the recipient of Clarkson's Golden Knight Award, and in 1991 received the University of Connecticut Law School's Distinguished Alumnus Award. He is a trustee and the immediate past president of the law school's foundation. He is also a member of the Clarkson School of Business Advisory Council, which he chaired for a number of years.
A Clarkson Trustee since 1989, he has chaired the board's budget and finance committee and the compensation sub-committee. He has also served on a number of other board committees, including investment, audit, campus life and executive. He currently serves as secretary of the Board of Trustees.
