Slic Network Solutions Forms Partnership With Two Local Schools
Phase one involves a college preparatory program for high school juniors and seniors at St. Regis Falls. A Clarkson graduate student team, consisting of Michelle Guymon, Christopher Joanis and Amy Mucenski, will facilitate a program that addresses key areas of life in the college environment and the business world.
The graduate students will conduct seminars on college and job application, financial aid preparation, resume and scholarship writing, multiculturalism and communication skills. The St. Regis students will have the opportunity to participate in an overnight visit to SUNY Potsdam and a tour of Clarkson University. Seniors and juniors will also participate in a shadow program with SLIC Network Solutions, which will allow them to spend a day with company employees to gain knowledge in their fields of interest.
During Phase two, Clarkson graduate students will help Mrs. Belt's sixth grade class at St. Mary's School with career assessment and exposure. The children will take a career assessment exam, which will allow the graduate students to arrange for guest speakers in the sixth graders' areas of interest. The introduction will provide the students with a broader knowledge of potential careers.
Using this career knowledge the sixth graders will have the option of posting information about their favorite career on their own personal Web page. In order to create the Web pages, the students will learn computer applications like Microsoft FrontPage 98 and Corel Draw. The sixth-grade class will also complete a Web page design course at Clarkson University, taught by the School of Business Internet Consulting Group.
