Clarkson's Menz: "Today's Quebec Provincial Elections Will Affect Northern N.Y."

Northern New York residents and businesses have a stake in today's Quebec's provincial elections, says Fredric C. Menz, dean of the School of Business at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. Menz says a victory by the Liberal party would put on hold any moves toward separatism, and a stable Quebec would be good news for northern New York and help to improve business ties between the state and the province.

"Uncertainty in Canada about Quebec's possible separation has caused the Canadian dollar to depreciate in value," says Menz. "If the Liberals win the election, prospects for an independent Quebec will be diminished, so the Canadian dollar may appreciate. If so, Canadians should have a greater incentive to make purchases outside Canada, including New York. Since New York is Quebec's largest state trading partner and a major destination of Quebec tourists, the effects would not be trivial."
