Research Interests
Dr. Marzocca is a PI/Co-PI in a number of industry-government-university research projects. Prof. Marzocca has extensive relevant research experience in design and modeling, including fluid-structure interactions problems, structural dynamics, advanced composite structures, engineering system reliability, wind turbine technologies. Recent projects: 
Efficient Reduced-Order Modeling Tools for Aeroelastic Predictions in Super Long-Span Bridges (2010-2014): The results of this research will advance the knowledge of nonlinear fluid-structure interaction modeling of long- and super-long-span bridges and many other flexible structural systems exposed to aerodynamic loading, including long span bridges, wind turbines, skyscrapers, only to name a few. The results will also be useful to the engineer interested in retrofitting existing flexible structures with passive and active flow controls and other modifications as well as help engineers interested in developing improved structural health monitoring strategies.
Smart Rotor Blades Sensing for Next Generation Wind Turbines (2011-2013): This feasibility study is to develop smart wind blade technologies; blades with integrated distributed fiber optic strain sensors to measure local strains at specific locations. The strain information obtained real time from the sensors can then be utilized in multiple ways to enhance the efficiency of turbines. Strain information will be used for structural health monitoring of the turbines and the real time estimation of variation in wind load, two promising ways for reducing overall cost of the energy production.
Optiwind Wind Turbine System Design (2008-2011): This effort sponsored by Optiwind Inc and NYSERDA. Optiwind is commercializing a new technology for wind power that provides a cost effective solution for mid-sized wind projects.  The technology is cost effective in 150kW and 300kW sized installations.
ARI Wind Turbine Testing (2008-2011): This effort sponsored by ARI Green Energy is to perform wind turbine performance testing and develop highly reliable and efficient 1kW, 3.5kW, and 50kW horizontal axis wind turbine. Performance, acoustics, and structural tests are on-going. 
Fabrication and Marketing of Smart Wind Turbine Blade (2006-2008): This project sponsored by Vento Tek, and Metropolitan Development Association of Syracuse and Central NY is to develop a Smart Wind Turbine Blade prototype. The SWTB is made up by composite materials and embedded flow control actuators to improve the aerodynamic efficiency and reduce noise in turbulent fluctuating flows.
Development and Commercialization of Novel Wind Turbines (2008-2009): This effort is sponsored by Vento Tek, and the Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration CAP-IV Commercialization Effort. Within this project the SWTB will be further developed and field tests will be performed.
Aeroelastic control of flexible wing and rotor blades (1999-2003): This effort was funded by NASA LaRC. It involves the development of active and passive control strategies for advanced aircraft wings and rotating blades using the tailoring property of composite material and novel actuators.
Reliability and Engineering Assessment of Energy Systems (2006-2011): This effort, funded by GE, is to develop physics based models and accelerated life assessment tools based on Failure Modes and Effects Analysis for testing reliability and life assessment of complex industrial settings and identifies critical design or process characteristics that require special controls to prevent or detect failure modes.
Parametric Design and Modeling to perform MDO (2006-2008): This effort sponsored by Pratt & Whitney was to integrate commercial Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software to perform Multidisciplinary Optimization for the rapid design and optimization of lifting surfaces. A Variance Based Sensitivity Analysis was conducted to prove that the software integration was successful.
Advancement of Intelligent Aerospace Systems (AIAS) (2009-2011): This effort, sponsored by AFOSR, is to develop and integrate Active Feedback Flow Control (AFFC) technologies into an experimental test bed High-Lift System (HLS). The aerodynamic performance of HLS is limited by the onset of boundary layer separation. The ability to delay or eliminate flow separation and enhance circulation control through the use of boundary layer flow control technology would significantly increase the efficiency of the host lifting surface.
Design and Processing of Composite Structures for Photovoltaic Devices from Nanoparticle and Nanostructured Thin Films (2009-2011): This project supported by US ARMY ARL/ARO is to investigate, at a fundamental level, various aspects of nanostructured materials for enhancing the light conversion efficiency and long term reliability of photovoltaic devices. It will comprise of both experimental and computational investigations and it will generate the fundamental knowledge required for the development of performance prediction tools, computational and experimental, for PV cells by investigating mechanical/thermal/electrical long-term reliability issues of PV materials and cell designs. A set of computational analysis/modeling, simulations and testing/characterization activities are proposed to understand the long-term reliability of PV materials.
