Insurance for J1 Visiting Scholars
Faculty and Scholars in J-1 status are required to have medical insurance in effect which covers yourself and any dependents in J-visa status for sickness or accident during the duration of your program. Clarkson University has information on available insurance plans that meet the US federal government requirements and can assist you and your advisor with the completion of the application documents. You may also make your own arrangements; however, you must complete the Insurance Waiver form and provide the ISSO with the referenced information for your file.
According to US federal guidelines, the minimum insurance coverage shall provide:
- medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness;
- repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500;
- expenses associated with medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $10,000; and
- a deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.
