W.J. Rowley Laboratories contains a14,000 square foot experimental space including 17 laboratories,  six walk-in constant temperature rooms, a dark room, and pilot plant area for chemical and microbiological analysis of environmental samples, laboratory and pilot-scale testing of treatment technologies, characterization and transport of contaminants in water, air, soil and hazardous waste, and characterization of interfacial phenomena in environmental systems.

Molecular microbiology laboratories in W.J. Rowley Laboratories are segregated for environmental sample processing, a BSL II lab for culture work, and a clean lab for working with nucleic acids, each equipped with a MilliQ water purification system.  An additional clean lab is used for storage of primers, probes, and PCR reaction mixes and for their preparation to avoid carryover contamination of PCR products.  The labs are equipped with all necessary equipment for microbiological analysis of environmental samples such as water jacketed incubators, thermalcycling equipment, a Roche 480 real time sequence detection system, chemical fume hoods, -20ºC and -80ºC freezers, autoclaves, HEPA-filtered laminar flow hoods, a Coy anaerobic chamber, refrigerated high speed centrifuges, ovens, incubators, and refrigerators.
