Power Engineering

Clarkson's Power Engineering program emphasizes both education and research. Our power engineering graduates are known for their solid power engineering foundation, their ability to apply advanced computer, communications, electronics, control and signal processing technologies to the power industry, and their willingness to work hard and contribute in areas including research and development, planning, design, operations, field services, and construction. Faculty and students are involved in Clarkson's Center for Sustainable Energy Systems, and prepare for careers developing renewable energy technologies and sustainable energy systems.

Undergraduate electrical engineering students can elect to concentrate in power engineering. Their typical coursework would include Energy Converion, Power System Engineering, Transmission and Distribution, High Voltage Engineering, and Alternate Energy Systems. Our students can also choose to add a minor in Sustainable Energy Systems. Graduate level coursework includes Dielectrics, Power System Protection, Power System Market Operations, and others.

Faculty are involved in research in the areas of high voltage engineering, power system planning, operations, and markets, power quality, power distribution, and protection. Research funding comes from Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, New York State Energy Research and Development Agency, National Grid, and others.
