At the 13th International High Assurance Systems Engineering Symposium, held Nov. 10-12, 2011, in Boca Raton, FL, WVU - LCSEE researchers received the Best Paper Award for the manuscript entitled "Effects of user habituation in keystroke dynamics on password security policy." The paper authors are Zahid Syed and Sean Banerjee, PhD students, Qi Cheng, MS graduate, and their advisor, Prof. Bojan Cukic.
In this paper, the authors investigate the benefits of user authentication schemes which combine password secrecy and keystroke dynamics, the unique rhythm of typing the credentials. As they type the password multiple times, computer users tend to develop unique typing patterns which, if accounted for, strengthen password security. The confirmation of user habituation in password typing is opening significant opportunities for the development of new trustworthy user authentication schemes.
