Matthew J. Flynn II ‘14
Political Science with minors in Law Studies and Economics
Matt Flynn is a seasoned veteran when it comes to campus involvement. A Canton, N.Y. native, Matt has gotten involved in the Clarkson Guard, the College Republicans student group, the ARMY ROTC program, and the Economics Club. Not to mention, he’s also a Peer Educator, which means that he mentors first year students and he was the face behind Clarkson's Golden Knight mascot during a recent campus photo shoot. Let’s see what else Matt has been up to.
Q: Why did you choose Clarkson?
A: Clarkson offered a great education, close proximity to home, and the opportunity to serve my country after four years as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Everything felt right during my visit.
Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
A: During my high school senior year, I ran for a local county seat. Although I lost, it was a great experience, and provided me the opportunity to be interviewed on national television.
Q: Who is your favorite “famous” person?
A: Ronald Reagan. He had great leadership, decisiveness, and the ability to turn America around.
Q: What has been your favorite professor?
A:Professor Collins, who teaches Law & Society, has a diverse experience as an attorney. He previously worked as an associate in a large law firm, as an assistant district attorney, and he is currently working in a small private practice. During class, he shares personal experiences that directly relate to the lesson being taught.
Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: It would be the ability to fly. Traveling by plane is great, but pricey.
Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
A: Netflix. From opening weekend to finals week, I can be found watching my favorite episode of The Office or other TV shows.
Q: What unique experiences have you had at Clarkson?
A: With ARMY ROTC, I had the unique opportunity to ride in an ARMY Chinook helicopter.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: Golf and hockey are both passions of mine. I played hockey in high school, and am still ‘learning’ to play golf. Over December break, I set things up with my boss so that I can play hockey during my lunch break!
Q: What are your goals for the future?
A: My immediate goal is to go to law school. I hope to go enroll in one of the Top 100 law schools, preferably one in an urban area.
Q: Where is your favorite place in the world?
A: New York City. There’s just lots going on all the time. I enjoy the fast pace.
Q: What is your favorite spot on campus?
A: That would have to be Deneka Fitness Center. During the semester, it is nice to blow off some steam and relax.
Q: What does “defy convention” mean to you?
A: The status quo of yesterday is just that, yesterday’s status quo. Those who can learn from the status quo, but continue to push the envelope, are the game changers.
