When Matt Mastro ’11 was looking at colleges, he had his future in mind.

“I hope to work for an agricultural-related company in the future. I knew a Clarkson degree could get me there because employers know that Clarkson prepares students with the right education needed to succeed in the real world,” he says.

Mastro, an mechanical engineering major from Sherburne, N.Y., had other reasons to choose Clarkson as well.

“As soon as I visited Clarkson, I knew I wanted to go here,” he explains. “I felt like I would not just be another number and that Clarkson offered great hands-on opportunities for students.”

One of the hands-on activities that Mastro is involved in is the Clean Snowmobile Team, one of 14 Special Projects for Engineering Experience and Design (SPEED) teams. With the team, he has competed in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Clean Snowmobile Challenge.

It’s no surprise Mastro is involved in SAE. He is a recipient of the SAE Engineering Scholarship, which is given to incoming freshman who plan on majoring in engineering and have a high school overall average of 90 or better. The scholarship provided Mastro with an extra $6,000 in aid each year.

Other than the SAE SPEED team, Mastro is also involved in Pi Tau Sigma, the mechanical engineering honor society, and is starting a snowmobile club on campus next semester.
