Thanks to the continuing efforts of my faculty colleagues,
CAMP completed another very successful year, during which about
five million dollars, a record, were raised through research contracts
and unrestricted grants. This includes the million dollars provided
by NYSTAR. At this level, CAMP faculty raised about half of the
total Clarkson research funding. Now we are starting 2001-02 with
some good and bad news. The CAMP annual technical meeting held this
year in Saratoga Springs was very successful, a STAR center to be
based in Syracuse with significant Clarkson participation was announced,
several new large federal grants were obtained, several polishing
and metrology tools were commissioned in our CMP laboratories as
described elsewhere in this report, and several new corporate members
joined CAMP. The bad news is mostly clouds on the horizon caused
by the impact of the economic slowdown on the funding decisions
of our corporate customers. We remain vigilant and are actively
pursuing alternate state, federal, and private funding with strong
support from the University administration. We are also exploring
collaborative projects with several NYSTAR CATs and other research
centers. I will describe these efforts, when they succeed, in later
newsletters.
