Clarkson University Installed a Wind Turbine Blade Test Facility

BTF

The Clarkson University Wind Turbine Blade Test Facility (BTF). A TPI Composite (www.tpicomposites.com/) blade is used to commission the facility.

Clarkson University, with sponsorship from the Center for Evaluation of Clean Energy Technologies (CECET Inc., an Intertek Company) and funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), has installed a Wind Turbine Blade Test Facility (BTF). The Center for Advanced Materials Processing and Clarkson University have also significantly contributed to the development of the facility. This facility was established to support and grow New York based wind market activities through performance testing, research, and certification of wind systems. 

The Center for Evaluation of Clean Energy Technologies is made up of a coalition that includes university and private team members with expertise in the appropriate areas. Intertek, AWST, Clarkson University, Binghamton University, Alfred State, RIT, and Syracuse COE are the founding members.  CECET aims to identify and prioritize performance-based research needs based on wind and solar PV market input and results from laboratory and field evaluations and build a strong connection between research, the laboratory and field testing.

The state-of-the-art BTF is capable of testing up to 15m long blades, for wind turbines with 250kW nominal power.  Strong participation and growth potentials focus on testing and research related to system and component safety, performance, reliability, durability, longevity and certification.  The BTF leverages ongoing collaborative efforts with national labs such as the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and private industry partners such as TPI Composites. The BTF also supports industry participation & continuing education through Distance Learning and a Workforce Development Program.
