Asked what he liked most about Clarkson, Shawn Mazzeo ’10, said “without a doubt, the people that go here.”

Mazzeo, a civil engineering major, said he has made many close friends, mostly through extracurricular activities. “Everyone seems to share a common bond,” he said.

Mazzeo volunteers as an EMT with the Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad. He’s also involved in crew, the ski club, intramural hockey and CUTSA (Clarkson University Transfer Student Association).

“Life at Clarkson is very busy for me,” he said. “I am involved in many activities and take as many credits as possible. No matter how busy my workout gets, you can always find me at open skate in Cheel Arena during the week.”

What will he remember the most? “I would say the friends I have made, and the fun we've had over the semester,” he said, “whether it was learning to play hockey or cramming to study for finals.”

When he was searching for his next step after Nassau Community College, Mazzeo, who was an engineering science major, said Clarkson offered all the courses he was interested in and, with its “modest class size,” stood out among its competitors.

Mazzeo said he likes the “small college feel” Clarkson offers, especially with the individual help he got while transferring. “The administration at Clarkson is very knowledgeable and was helpful with my transfer process, as were the professors.”

In preparing for the future, Mazzeo said Clarkson “has continued to challenge my engineering ability” as well as giving him the flexibility to prepare for a graduate program. “Even transferring in as an upperclassman, I will be able to get a minor in business and possibly mathematics,” he said.

Right now, Mazzeo is considering Clarkson’s accelerated masters program in engineering and business administration. “I definitely plan to attend a graduate program,” he said.

Mazzeo said he would recommend Clarkson to students who are want to attend a competitive engineering program while still being able to graduate on time. Clarkson is very good at accepting transfer credits, he said, so students do not have to repeat unnecessary course work.
