Clarkson University Dean Peter Turner Named Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

Peter R. Turner, dean of the Clarkson University School of Arts and Sciences, has been selected as a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

Peter R. Turner, dean of the Clarkson University School of Arts and SciencesFellowship honors SIAM members who have made outstanding contributions to the fields served by the organization. Turner was selected for his leadership in advancing applied mathematical education, including the creation of SIAM Undergraduate Research Online.

"SIAM is very selective about their fellows program," says Clarkson Senior Vice President Chuck Thorpe. "There are only about 250 fellows to date worldwide. Dean Turner's involvement as SIAM vice president for education and as founding editor-in-chief of SIAM Undergraduate Research Online was likely a key factor in his selection as a fellow. This work with undergraduate education and research is one of the reasons why we find him so valuable to the University."

Turner, also a professor of mathematics at Clarkson, has participated in and organized several outreach activities on behalf of SIAM, including the SIAM-NSF Modeling across the Curriculum initiative, SIAM partnership with the Museum of Mathematics, and SIAM participation in USA Science and Engineering Festivals. He also chaired the working group that produced the SIAM Report on undergraduate computational science and engineering education.

Turner's research interests are in computer arithmetic, level-index system, functional analysis, optimization, numerical analysis, parallel processing, computer vision, and computer algebra

Turner came to Clarkson in 2002 as division head for Mathematics and Computer Science, and in 2008, he assumed the post of interim dean of Arts and Sciences, and was named dean in 2009. Prior to Clarkson, Turner served 28 years on the faculties of the University of Lancaster in England and, later, at the United States Naval Academy.

He received his Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield in 1973, and in the intervening years, Turner gained a reputation both for his scholarly contributions and for his innovative academic leadership.

He will be recognized at the 2013 SIAM Annual Meeting Prizes and Awards Luncheon on July 9 in San Diego.

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics is an international society of more than 14,000 individual members, including applied and computational mathematicians and computer scientists, as well as other scientists and engineers. Members from 85 countries are researchers, educators, students, and practitioners in industry, government, laboratories, and academia. The Society, which also includes nearly 500 academic and corporate institutional members, serves and advances the disciplines of applied mathematics and computational science by publishing a variety of books and prestigious peer-reviewed research journals, by conducting conferences, and by hosting activity groups in various areas of mathematics. SIAM provides many opportunities for students including regional sections and student chapters. Further information is available at http://www.siam.org.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
